Measuring the Newtonian constant of gravitation G with an atomic interferometer.
We have recently completed a measurement of the Newtonian constant of gravitation G using atomic interferometry. Our result is G=6.67191(77)(62)×10(-11) m(3) kg(-1) s(-2) where the numbers in parenthesis are the type A and type B standard uncertainties, respectively. An evaluation of the measurement uncertainty is presented and the perspectives for improvement are discussed. Our result is appro...
متن کاملMeasuring the Newtonian constant of gravitation with a differential free-fall gradiometer: a feasibility study.
An original setup is presented to measure the Newtonian Constant of Gravitation G. It is based on the same principle as used in ballistic absolute gravimeters. The differential acceleration of three simultaneously freely falling test masses is measured in order to determine G. In this paper, a description of the experimental setup is presented. A detailed uncertainty budget estimates the relati...
متن کاملThe Newtonian constant of gravitation-a constant too difficult to measure? An introduction.
It is generally accepted that the magnitude of the force attracting two spherical bodies of mass M1 and M2, separated by a distance r, is given by Newton’s law of gravitation F = G M1M2 r2 . The constant, G, determines the strength of Newton’s inverse square law in a particular system of physical units and is, not surprisingly, known as Newton’s constant of gravitation. It is considered to be a...

15 صفحه اولA redetermination of the constant of gravitation
A redetermination of the constant of gravitation has boon made using the torsion balance in vacuo. The large masses were steel cylinders weighing about 66 kg, and the small masses spheres of gold, platinum, and optical glass final result obtained is 6.670 X10" cm3 g" 1 sec." . While the results obtained appeared to differ slightly with small balls of gold, platinum, or glass, it was shown by a ...
